5 Subtle Ways That Make An Eye Catching Headshot

5 Subtle Ways That Make An Eye Catching Headshot

Your headshot is your calling card and if it’s not getting you called in then you’re gonna have a hard time booking that big national commercial or guest spot on CSI.

Here are 5 simple and subtle ways that you can use to make an eye catching headshot from the crowd.

1. Retouching
Retouching is a dangerous little art. You can shave off years off your face with the simple click of a button but is that such a good idea? Not really. When you send a headshot off to a casting director you want to look like your picture. If you’re in your 50’s and the retoucher made you look like a 20-year-old then you’re most not going to get called in by that casting director again. Side note: if you’re looking for a retoucher we totally offer that service!

2. Photographer
If you’re friend took your picture with an iPhone then you’re gonna have a hard time getting called in for auditions. You need to pick a top notch photographer who has the equipment and know-how to make your headshots look professional.

3. Clothes
What you wear in your headshot is really important. You’re best bet is to focus on subtile clothes. Steer clear of loud colorful clothes or shirts with corporate logos like Pepsi. Unless you specifically want to target that company.

4. Paper
What kind of paper are you printing your headshots on? Are you printing them on copy paper from your personal computer? If you are you’re wasting a lot of ink and one perfectly good piece of paper for nothing! Paper selection is really great for actors who want their headshots to stand out. You want your headshot to be printed on nice photo or card stock paper. We’re currently printing headshots and model cards on our new satin paper and they look and feel amazing!

5. Cropping
Headshots are called that because casting directors want to see your face not your body, and this is especially true for the Internet. When casting directors look at photos online, they’re usually only seeing a small stamp sized photo on their computer screen. That small stamp sized photo has to be your face because even if you have an amazing body, they’re not going to notice.
