23 Oct 5 Things you must do after an audition

The art of the audition.
There are books, classes and whole websites dedicated to perfecting the auditioning process. But what about after?
Just as important as the audition is the art of letting it go. It’s essential for the mental well being of an actor to have a process on what to do after an audition. Hopefully these five tips will keep you from playing the ‘woulda, shoulda, coulda’ game in your car after an audition.
Let it go
Easier said then done, right? Like everything, this will come to you as time goes on and as you get out there and audition more often. The important thing is to not agonize over what you should/should not have done. Just remember, it’s just one audition out of many.
Post cards
Did you get a call back? Did you get put on avail? It would probably be a good idea to send the casting director a post card thanking them for giving you the opportunity to come in and letting you pretend that the new iPhone is the greatest thing ever and saved your marriage of twenty years.
What? You don’t have post cards? Fortunately we have you covered! We also have these handy-dandy ‘Thank You’ cards specifically made for that purpose!

Presents!
Did you just book a national campaign spot which let you buy that house in Malibu? Why don’t you send some love to the casting director who called you in for that job by giving them a gift. It doesn’t have to be extravagant or anything. It can be as simple as a dozen cookies. Just make sure they’re fancy-pants cookies. So no cheap Cosco brand cookies ya’ cheapskate!
Classes
If you’re not booking any commercials or even any call-backs then the problem may be with your skill. It takes lots of training and practice to make it in Hollywood. As Shaan Sharma said in his new book Commercial Acting in LA: A Session Director’s Guide, Hollywood is the Super Bowl of acting.
Mail or drop off a headshot
It really depends on this one, so you’ll want to double check and see if the casting director accepts drop offs. Just call and ask the assistant (the assistant is as far as you’ll go with drop offs) and ask if they accept drop off headshots or mailings. Not all will accept drop offs but most will accept mailings. If they do accept a drop off headshot, the casting office will most likely have a bin out in the lobby or the hallway way where you can just leave your headshot.
Just a note about headshots and postcards: This won’t get you work right away. It sometimes takes years to get a casting directors attention. We had one actor who printed a lot of headshots and post cards consistently do mailings and drop offs for over seven years! He just booked his 4th national commercial. Consistency is the key here. Casting directors like consistency.
You’re going to need a lot of headshots and postcards in this biz. Lucky for you we totally print those! Man, aren’t we awesome? We even have a great deal this month when you buy 100 headshots you can use 4 looks. That’s 25 headshots for each look with no additional fees!
