So you need new headshots and you don’t know who to shoot with. Whether it’s your first time or fifty-first time getting your headshots done, looking for a good photographer can be quite the undertaking. Here are a few tips to keep in mind when looking through a photographers gallery that’ll help you decide if the photographer is the right person for you.
1. They shoot in black and white.
This is a mistake a lot of beginners make, thinking that black and white photos are still used in the industry. If you see a photographer who has a lot of black and white headshots in their gallery, then they probably don’t know what they’re doing. Black and white headshots are basically dead in Hollywood for acting headshots. Although, if you’re a model you can have black and white photos in your port folio but the majority should be in color.
2. They don’t shoot digitally.
Film is expensive and you have to scan it in order to get it printed at a printer. Digital is cheaper, much more flexible, and you can take hundreds of photos with out paying for for film, which can get expensive.
3. “Creative” Cropping
Some photographers think that cutting off half of your head or extreme close ups look good on a headshot. They don’t.
4. They have everything except for headshots
Make no mistake about it, headshots have a very distinct look. There have been times we’ve received photos that look like they were taken at Sears or JC Penny’s. That may work for your senior photos but they don’t work in Hollywood.
5. They charge too much money.
There are exceptions to every rule but in general a good headshot photographer will charge somewhere between $300-$600. Anything more than that and is just throwing money away since you need to retake them every so often. Also, anything too cheap probably suggests that the person isn’t a real photographer but a hobbyist.
