28 May Make Your Headshot Stand Out in a Stack
You’ve walked into the audition with your BunkerLA printed headshot. You’ve dazzled them. You walk out. Now you wait.
There are lots of ways to have an edge in the business, but especially in that space between audition and casting/callback, whether your audition was taped or not, sometimes the only thing representing you in casting talks is your headshot… and it’s in a pile of other headshots… with, most likely, a lot of other people that look like you.
There are some tricks on how to make your headshot stand out amongst the rest. Some tips go against “rules” but there are times when you need to take a chance in order to stand out. Discuss all these factors with your representation before you decide to get creative. Your suggestions may get shot down, but your agent may like your take on setting yourself apart from the crowd.
- Headshot angle. Many people have a standard vertical headshot where their photo is up and down. Explore how your headshot looks running vertical. In a stack of shots, this will require people to stop for a moment and look more readily at your picture.
- Cropping. Most actors have white space surrounding their headshot photo. See how yours looks when it’s bled to the edge.
- Borders. As previously stated, many actors use white border around their actual photo. Try black. Don’t go crazy for neon or something. That will be a bit much, but many use black for dramatic and white for commercial. Take a look at reversing that color scheme.
- Paper. Use great paper. The more quality stock and finish you use, the more professional your shot will appear. It’ll step away from those who choose lower quality methods and materials. Not only does this make your shot more durable with all the shuffling that goes along with casting, but it screams professional.
