The difference between a Model Card and a Headshot

As the convention season draws near, we get a lot of beginning actors and models calling our office and asking us what the difference between a model card and headshot is and why they would need either.

In short, model cards are used for commercial print or runway print auditions and headshots are used for commercial, TV, and film auditions.

Even though model cards are supposed to be for print auditions, you can use them for commercial auditions as well and the same goes for headshots. You can use those for commercial print auditions too. For commercials (print and TV) there’s a lot of cross over between models and actors so it’s generally OK to use either model cards or headshots.

Another main difference between a model card and headshot is how they look. A model card (sometimes referred to as a zed card or comp card) is usually printed on a 5×8 card stock paper with one image printed on the front and a one image printed on the back. A headshot image is just one image with the name at the bottom right and nothing printed on the back.
