11 Feb Tip Tuesday: How often should you update your headshots?
Your headshot is probably your most important tool in your actor’s toolkit, so it only makes sense that you put a lot of effort into keeping them fresh and up to date.
As with everything, the opinions very on when you should take new headshots. Most people will give you the standard, “take new photos every two years” answer but is that really correct? It varies with people. If you’re a charactery male in his mid 40’s, chances are you probably won’t change very much. In which case you just want to keep a good supply of printed headshots on hand.
What if you have a kid, or what if you’ve grown a beard? Maybe you’ve put on a few pounds? That’s when it’s time to take action! It’s important to stay fresh and up-to-date especially with commercial acting, where styles will change overnight.
One actor that prints with us gets new headshots taken and printed every six months and he works a lot! He’s always watching commercials and taking notes on parts he could see himself in. At six months he’ll compile his notes and take another round of headshots based on those notes.
When it comes down to it, you want to go with what works for you. In our experience, with the proper research, photographer and printer, new headshots every six months can yield some great commercial success.
