26 Nov Open Call Auditions – Tips for Aspiring Models – Part 2

Last week we focused on what the ladies should do at modeling open call auditions so this week we’re going to talk about what the fellas should do. For the most part, it’s generally the same i.e. don’t be a jerk, show up on time, and all that. But there are a few differences in how agencies approach the guys.

No Charge
All of the reputable modeling agencies will not charge you an interview fee. There should be no costs associated with an open call. If you are being charged then you’re being scammed.
Interview
Relax and be friendly. They want to get to know you and get an idea of you’re temperament. No one wants to work with a jerk.
Pics
If you don’t have any pictures it’s not the end of the world but if you have headshots, model cards or a portfolio even better.
What to wear
As with the ladies, keep it simple. Jeans, a t-shirt and maybe a flannel shirt or jacket for a layered look.
Hair
Since men generally keep their hair short it’s not as big of an issue as with the women, but if you do have long hair you will probably be asked to put it in a bun or pony tail.
Cologne
Don’t wear any cologne! Agents can’t stress this enough. The smell lingers around long after you’ve left. But do take a shower because B.O. is just as bad.
Boxers or Briefs?
You’re probably going to be stripping down to your boxers or swimming trunks so don’t go commando. Also, don’t be surprised if they ask you to strip down to your boxers or swimming trunks because this industry is all about how you look. So let’s see that six-pack!
Height and looks
For the most part the height and look requirements are the same as for the women. Men should be physically fit with great skin and taller than 5’11”. The real difference is that women have the edge in terms of having more modeling opportunities but men can have a longer career. Older men tend to do much better in the industry where as a women’s modeling career will start to taper off in their mid twenties. It’s kind of a crummy situation but no one ever said the modeling world was a nice one.
When to show up
The open call time varies from agency to agency so be sure and call or check the agencies website. But the most important thing is to not be late! Don’t show up a half hour after the open call is over expecting to be seen.
Submitting by mail
If you want to be a model, you have to live in one of the major cities. And by major city (for the U.S. at least) it’s Los Angeles and New York. But what if you don’t live in either of these cities? You can always mail in your pictures because you never know, they may have a look they desperately need.
