01 Nov What if you don’t live in LA or New York?
America is a huge country and most actors can’t just drive to New York or Los Angeles for an audition. If you’re one of those people, don’t worry there’s still a lot you can do to move your career forward.
1. Training
This is probably the most obvious option right here. Find a reputable acting class in your area and enroll, but don’t limit yourself to just working on monologues and scenes try expanding your horizons. Improv is a huge plus with commercial casting directors and agents. Having plenty of improv training could give you a big advantage in your career. There’s also stand up comedy and why not even try your hand at writing too! Sylvester Stallone was a nobody until the movie Rocky and guess who wrote that? Sly Stallone himself and in three days no less!
2. Learn A Foreign Language
With the global market becoming a larger part of the industry, adding a second language to your actors tool box isn’t just a good idea, it’s quickly becoming necessary.
3. Look for work in your local market
With rising production costs more and more directors and producers are looking to regional markets to shoot their movies and TV shows. The Walking Dead shoots in Atlanta, Ga and while it’s very unlikely that a local actor would be cast as one of the stars or even series regulars, it’s a great opportunity to get your feet wet as an extra. Smaller independent movies and film student shorts are a great way to build up your resume before making the big move to Los Angeles or New York.
