What to do when you’re not auditioning

Acting is a feast and famine kind of occupation and there will be times when you don’t have anything to do. What can you do to keep yourself sharp? Sure, taking acting or improv classes is the obvious choice but that’s a pretty expensive option.

So what can the broke actor do to stay sharp? Well, the answer may surprise you: Become a couch potato!

Yes, I am giving you permission to go ahead and forget everything your parents told you about sitting in front of the TV for hours on end! The thing is you have to actively watch TV.

What that means is that you should observe your favorite shows and examine why they’re your favorite and what kind of choices the actors are making. And don’t even think about skipping over the commercials! That’s part of your homework too!

For commercials observe how long individual actors are on the screen and what they’re doing. You’d be surprised to learn that the average commercial are slice of life commercials and the typical actor is on screen for no more than a few seconds.

Well, there you go! So get on that couch and get started!
