What to expect at an audition

What to expect at an audition

For actors just starting out, an audition can be a pretty intimidating experience. So to help you on your first time out, here are a few things to expect you’re first time at an audition.

The sign in.
This generally should be the first thing you do. Casting calls can be a pretty hectic time for casting directors and their assistants so if your name isn’t on the sign in sheet, they won’t know you’re there. You’ll usually be asked for your name and contact info but some will ask for your social security number. You can just leave that blank.

The wait.
Be prepared to wait at auditions. Your audition time may be at 3pm but it isn’t unusual to not be seen until 4pm.

The sides.
The stack of papers near the sign in sheet are the sides or sometimes the story boards if the audition has no dialogue. If you didn’t receive the sides in an email, you can pick them up here. Pro tip: If you didn’t get your sides in an email, then show up early and grab the sides before you sign in so you can work on them before getting called in.

The explanation.
At commercial auditions, the casting director or assistant will call groups of actors into the room and give a group explanation of the audition. Be sure and listen! Many commercial auditions have a specific series of actions that marketing department wants to see happen.

The slate.
This is where you’ll stand on the mark (indicated by a piece of tape) and look into the camera and give your name and profile by turning to the left and to the right. It feels like a mug shot but it’s important to be positive and smile so it doesn’t look like one.

The goodbye.
Want to get more auditions from casting directors? Then don’t waste their time! Once the audition, just keep it simple by thanking them for calling you in and say goodbye. Pro tip: Never ask the casting director if you got a call back. If they liked you, they’ll call you back.

Letting it all go.
Acting is a marathon not a sprint so it’s important to keep things in perspective. Don’t worry if you didn’t get the part because there will be many, many more auditions to come.
